Where is your most recent field placement? I recently completed my first field placement at CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial Hospital in Lufkin, Texas.
What made you choose your MSW program? While I am fascinated by the history of Nacogdoches and enjoy the small town "home" feeling, I attribute my decision to attend Stephen F. Austin State University primarily to Professor Wilma Córdova. Having her as a mentor has empowered me to take on the world!
Who has been your favorite instructor? A great deal of respect is due to the faculty at the School of Social Work. Nevertheless, if I were to choose one favorite thus far, it would be Dr. Emmerentie Oliphant because her research transforms lives. It has been a privilege working with her (and several other faculty members) over the past two years, resulting in my first academic publication.
What was your favorite class? Social Work in Mental Health
What was your favorite place to study on campus? Ralph W. Steen Library provides a great environment for study, or you can take in the campus' beautiful scenery.
What is your favorite place to eat on campus? Starbucks & Chick-fil-A
What was the best thing about your academic program? As a student, I am fortunate to experience community collaboration at its finest. My favorite aspect of the MSW program is that it focuses on advanced generalist practice in a rural context. Despite the numerous barriers associated with non-metropolitan regions, their strengths and resilience remain evident.
What are you listening to today? There is nothing more fulfilling than listening to a classic rock song from the golden era. Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, Billy Squier, or Led Zeppelin keep my spirits high.
Where do you see yourself in three to five years? What are your goals? In three to five years, I will be a Licensed Master Social Worker in the great state of Texas, and I will pursue my clinical license. My goal is to obtain a doctoral degree in social work and to teach at the university level.
Advice to applicants: Get involved and keep an open mind. It is only then that you will be able to establish meaningful relationships and gain knowledge from your peers. In the wise words of Dr. Freddie Avant, "Always be aware of your use of self."
