Why social work? At the core of my heart I love to help others and I wanted to make it my career.
Where is your most recent field placement? My field placement for advance standing was as an intern at the State Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El's District Office. I engaged in social work practice on the micro, mezzo, and macro level. I am truly thankful for this field placement.
What made you choose your MSW program? I graduated from MU in 2019 with my bachelor's degree, the social work department has always felt like my second home. I wanted to be surrounded by peers and professionals that I trusted and felt comfortable with as I took the next step in my career.
Who has been your favorite instructor? All of the instructors are my favor! This is a tough question. If I had to make a selection it would be Dr. Wanja Ogongi, she adds a diverse perspective to her instruction that I appreciated.
What has been your favorite class? My macro practice class with Dr. Jessica Weiss-Ford, she allowed the class to take on a project that applied to a real organization, allowing our homework/class work to have a real impact and not just be another assignment. This class gave me purpose and allowed me to have a positive impact.
What is your favorite place to study on campus? The library is my favorite place to study on campus, it has small private study rooms, private computer areas, rooms with open window layouts, quiet rooms, and a Starbucks among other amenities.
What is your favorite place to eat on campus? My favorite place to eat is the Student Memorial Center (SMC) they have a variety of foods ready to go.
What is the best thing about your academic program? The best part about my academic program was the support I felt from the staff and my classmates; we were all in it together. As I mentioned before MU feels like a second home.
What are you listening to today? I listen to the Morning Agenda podcast, introduced to me by Dr. Laura Granruth; it keeps me up to date on local and statewide news.
What are you reading right now? Right now, I read school policies, procedures, and Federal Legislation as it relates to my work. I am also studying to take the LSW, most of my reading revolves around social work theory and practice. Among all things I read my bible.
Where do you see yourself in three to five years? What are your goals? My future goals are to grow within the organization I am working at. I am in the process to obtain my LSW and I would like to pursue my LCSW.
Advice to applicants: Be open to networking and remember your "why;" if this path were easy everyone would do it.
