Ways of Coping for Social Workers

Social workers (and most certainly social work students) have lots of choices when it comes to coping with everyday and extraordinary stress in our own personal lives as well as the workplace.

The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (pdf) was developed by Susan Folkman and Richard S. Lazarus and you can view an extensive list of their research on the theory of effective coping by visiting Google Scholar.

As an exercise in professional self-awareness why not use the Ways of Coping Questionnaire the next time you make it through a particularly stressful event? What methods do you use the most? Was it the most effective way for you to manage stress?
